SEC Weekly Feature - Athens, GA - Glory to Ole Georgia

Town: Athens, GA

Head Coach: Mark Richt

Football Stadium: Sanford Stadium

via
Nickname/Mascot: Bulldogs, Hairy Dawg, and Uga

via
via
Colors: We bleed Red and Black

Traditions: The Battle Hymn of the Republic, "Glory Glory to Ole Georgia", fried chicken and bourbon, "GOOOOOOOO Dawgs, Sic 'Em Woof Woof Woof Woof!", season tickets passed down from generation to generation, ringing the bell after a victory, walking under The Arch once you've graduated, visiting the Tree that owns itself, Buck Belue to Lindsay Scott, "Gators wear jean shorts!", Vince Dooley, Larry Munson, Silver Britches, and The Largest Cocktail Party

Famous Alumni: Hershel Walker, Kim Basinger, John Bell (lead singer of Widespread Panic), Alton Brown, Lewis Grizzard, All 4 members of R.E.M., Ryan Seacrest (but we don't like to talk about it), and the B-52's

Biggest Rival: We pretty much hat anything orange

Where to Stop for Food: Weaver D's and Peaches. Fried Chicken and all the fixin's.

Where to Watch the Game if You Don't Have a Ticket: Any tailgate equipped with a T.V. and cocktails, which is pretty much any alumni tailgate. Also, any of the bars downtown...see below.

Where to Party After A Win: There are 75 bars with a square mile in downtown Athens, I'm sure you can find something.

There is nothing, I repeat nothing, better than waking up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday in the fall, dressing head to toe in your best red and black, pulling up to your tailgate, gobbling down a homemade chicken biscuit and pouring your first Bloody Mary.  There is also no better feeling in the world than knowing for the rest of the day all you have to do is talk Georgia Football, recount college memories, tailgate hop and cheer on your favorite team.  And all of the beautiful scenes of fall in the South there is perhaps nothing more beautiful than walking into Sanford Stadium on a crisp fall afternoon surrounded by 92,000 of your closest friends for another great match-up between the hedges.
Glory Glory, y'all!

Thank you to my friend, Alexis, who attended Georgia for all the insider information.  She and I are in law school together.

Alexis is on the right.

I was fortunate enough to attend a game at Sanford Stadium when I was in college.  Athens, undoubtably, is one of the best college towns in country.  It is a beautiful town tucked away in the middle of Georgia.  I ran into the typical obnoxious UGA fans, but overall my trip was very pleasant and made some great friends.  A game Between the Hedges is a unique experience and will be loud.  I wish I was traveling there this weekend for the Gamecocks tilt against the Dawgs.
May the best team take the East!

xoxo,
Ashton

Great post! Alexis was a sorority sister of mine...small world! There are a few people you could add to famous alumni: Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum both went to Georgia.
